May the 4th Be With You: Healing and the Force Within

Cue the lightsabers, the wisdom of Yoda, and the drama of healing journeys—because May the 4th is more than just a fun holiday for sci-fi fans. It’s a reminder that every one of us carries the power to transform, protect our peace, and rise—even after the darkness.
I’ve always loved hero movies—their epic battles, the emotional backstories, the constant tension between good and evil. But what draws me in most is how deeply these stories reflect us. The fight between light and dark isn’t just on the screen—it’s something we all navigate within ourselves. We each have an origin story, shaped by where we come from, what we’ve been through, and the choices we've made. And at any moment, we can tap into our inner villain—when fear, pain, or pride take the lead—or choose to rise as the hero, fueled by courage, love, and growth. That’s why May the 4th lights me up every year. It’s not just a Star Wars celebration—it’s a powerful reminder that we each have the capacity to transform, to reclaim our narrative, and to lean into the Force within.
As a therapist, I know healing doesn’t come only from effort. It comes from belief—
Belief in yourself.
Belief in the process.
And belief in the quiet, steady Force within you… even when it feels buried under pain, doubt, or trauma.
Let’s explore how the story of Star Wars parallels our journeys toward healing, growth, and inner strength—even if you’ve never watched a single film.
1. The Light and the Dark Are Both Part of You
In Star Wars, “the Force” is the energy that connects all living things. Jedi warriors learn to use the light side of the Force—focused on clarity, compassion, and peace—while the Sith are seduced by the dark side, driven by fear, anger, and power.
Characters like Anakin Skywalker (who later becomes Darth Vader) show us that the battle between light and dark doesn’t just happen out there—it happens within us. Anakin begins as a brave and gifted boy, but fear of loss and trauma slowly pull him toward destructive choices.
Like Anakin, many of us wrestle with pain, anger, or anxiety. And sometimes we fear that these struggles mean we’re broken or beyond saving.
But in truth—healing isn’t about denying your shadow. It’s about learning how to sit with it without letting it consume you. Anxiety, trauma, or sadness aren’t flaws—they’re signals. And when you stop running from them, you begin to reclaim your power.
2. Yoda Energy = Therapist Energy
Master Yoda is one of the wisest characters in the Star Wars universe. He doesn’t fight for power—he guides with patience, presence, and purpose. When he trains Luke Skywalker (a young Jedi-in-training), he doesn’t hand him answers. He teaches him to slow down, trust himself, and listen to the Force within.
Sound familiar?
That’s therapy. As therapists, we’re not here to “fix” you or give you orders. We’re here to help you see yourself clearly—to reflect, challenge, support, and guide. Just like Yoda didn’t force Luke into battle, we don’t force healing. We help you walk toward it.
And like Luke, healing sometimes means going into the cave of your own fears—and learning you’re stronger than you think.

3. Your Origin Story Doesn’t Define You
One of the most powerful truths in Star Wars is that where you come from doesn’t have to define where you’re going.
Anakin’s fall to the dark side didn’t erase the fact that he started as someone full of light.Leia was born into royalty but chose to lead a rebellion. Rey—one of the newest Jedi heroes—was told she came from “nothing.” She had no famous family name, no clear legacy… and yet, she chose her path anyway and became a legend in her own right.
This mirrors real life:
You are not your trauma.
You are not your upbringing.
You are not the worst thing that happened to you.
You are the author now.
Rewriting your narrative isn’t about pretending the past didn’t happen—it’s about deciding who you get to be now.
4. There’s a Force Within You That Helps With Healing- And We Call It Resilience
In the movies, the Force is described as invisible but ever-present. It moves through everything. It helps Jedi stay grounded, focused, and connected.
In therapy, we might not call it “the Force,” but we do believe in something powerful that lives inside each of us. It’s your resilience; your courage. It's the part of you that shows up, even when it’s hard; the part that chooses healing, even when you feel tired.
It's the part that hasn’t given up.
Maybe you’ve been navigating childhood wounds, relationship pain, burnout, anxiety, or grief. Maybe life has felt more like survival than peace.
But if you’re here, reading this—you’re already accessing that Force. Every time you try again, open up, ask for help, or take one small step toward healing, you are proving that the Force is strong in you.
So, on this May 4th… here’s your Jedi mind trick:
You are not too broken.
You are not too far gone.
You are not alone.
The Force is strong within you - and can be your pathway to healing.
Therapy may not come with lightsabers, but it offers something far more powerful:
🌀 Compassion
🌀 Truth
🌀 And the space to become who you were always meant to be.
So yeah, maybe I geek out a little on May the 4th—but it’s because I see so much of our real-life journey in these stories. We all wrestle with light and shadow. We all have pain that tries to shape us. But we also have power. Choice. Healing. And a Force within that’s been with us all along.
